Can You Build a Motor With One Wire and a Magnet?

Balance a copper wire on a battery and watch it spin endlessly like a tiny carousel!

Required Household Materials

  • ✓ One AA battery (fresh alkaline)
  • ✓ One strong Neodymium disc magnet
  • ✓ Thick copper wire (uninsulated, 10-12 inches)
  • ✓ Wire cutters / pliers

🎯 Quick Overview

  • Goal: We will build a "homopolar motor" to watch how electricity and magnetism combine to create physical spin.
  • The Brain Hook: Can You Build a Motor With One Wire and a Magnet?
  • Time & Tools: 10 Minutes | AA battery, neodymium magnet, copper wire.
  • 🔬 The Science (In Plain English)

When you place the copper wire on top of the battery, it forms a complete electrical loop from the positive top terminal to the negative magnet terminal at the bottom. Electric current flows down the wire. Since this wire is inside the magnetic field of the neodymium magnet, it feels a sideways pushing force called the "Lorentz Force." This force pushes the wire sideways, causing it to spin around the battery!

    💡 The Profile-Matched Analogy

Imagine a water slide. The electricity flowing down the wire is like the sliding water. The magnet is like a giant wind fan blowing sideways across the slide. When the water slides down, the fan pushes it sideways, making the whole slide spin in a circle!

    🛠️ 5-Minute Action Steps

  • Snap the strong Neodymium magnet to the flat, negative bottom terminal of the AA battery. Stand the battery vertically on a flat table.
  • Bend the copper wire into a symmetrical heart or butterfly shape. The center top point should point down to rest on the battery's positive top cap.
  • The bottom ends of the wire loop should gently embrace the magnetic disc at the bottom, just barely touching it.
  • Set the wire on top of the battery cap and watch it instantly balance and spin rapidly!
  • 🗣️ Parent Script (Word-for-Word)

  • "Look at this plain metal wire. Does it have any batteries or engines inside?"
  • [Pause 3 seconds]
  • "Let's rest it on top of the battery and watch. Wow! It's spinning like a carousel!"
  • "How do the battery and magnet push the wire without any gears?"
  • 🛡️ Safety & Supervision Note

Neodymium magnets are extremely powerful and are dangerous if swallowed. Keep away from toddlers. The battery and wire can become warm if left running for more than 30 seconds; remove the wire when finished testing.
